Hot Wheels sales sizzled on several levels with the creation of the FREE track program.  Kids could receive a Hot Wheels branded piece of track FREE with every vehicle purchased.  This low-cost premium reward paid huge dividends as consumers mailed in for an average of 8 pieces, and further drove upsells of track sets (because straight track has its limitations).  Find a way to connect your low cost reward to an upsell and you’ve got a formula for success.  Mattel repeated this program for three years based on the initial success.
